 Trigonella Foenumgraecum

our very own 'methi' is the most commonly used herbal galactagogues.it is an important ingredient in Indian curry powders. it enhances the flavor and modifies the color and texture of the dishes.

fenugreek seeds contain around 25% protein, 7% fat, and 58% carbohydrates, out of which 25% is dietary fiber. the antidiabetic and lipid-lowering uses of fenugreek are attributed to the high-fiber constituent. it is also used as a food stabilizer, adhesive, and emulsifying agent due to its fiber, protein, and gum content. it has a beneficial influence on digestion and constipation. Fenugreek is a rich source of iron, containing 33mg/100 gms dry weight.

The main chemical constituents are steroidal sapogenins, phytoestrogens, and polyphenols. the phytoestrogens are similar in chemical structure to the female hormone estrogen and can bind to the estrogen receptor in the body thus having an impact on the endocrine system. This could be the reason for the effect on lactation. it is also thought that fenugreek stimulates sweat production, and since the breast is a modified sweat gland, fenugreek may affect breast milk production in this manner.

Polyphenols are well-known free radicals scavengers aiding their use as a powerful antioxidant. the fenugreek leaves are rich in calcium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, carotene, B- complex vitamins, and a high amount of vitamin - c.
